Its aim is to maintain plants in good condition through efficient use of natural precipitation, which ultimately reduces the requirement for supplemental water. Xeriscaping offers a few benefits, the most important of which is water conservation. The watering requirements for gardens in an area can put a strain on existing water supplies and using xeriscaping can help ease this problem. Xeriscaping maximizes the use of natural rainfall, although this does not mean that it is the only water required. Some additional irrigation may be needed to tend a xeriscape garden. To minimize this, the water needs to be applied efficiently. Best practices include drip-irrigation and soaker hoses, which supply water directly to the roots of plants.
Using native plants is a common sense practice for a xeriscape garden. These will cope better with the local weather conditions and are also better suited to local soil conditions. This in turn means they need less water, fertilizer and pesticides to survive and flourish.
Mulching is a common practice used in xeriscape landscaping and involves covering the soil around plants with a layer of organic material. This can include wood chip, pine needles, tree bark or compost. Mulching offers a few advantages, including better retention and slower release of moisture, weed control and soil erosion protection.
The benefits of xeriscape gardening can include reduced maintenance. There are a couple of reasons for this. Reduced watering is required and native plants that are better suited to local conditions can cope better without requiring too much tending.
