Christmas Stocking Fillers
by Samantha Smith
Nothing says Christmas quite like the string of stockings left out for Santa to fill on Christmas Eve night! Christmas stockings are a functional, personal and joyous festive tradition. Universally, we've become very creative with the tradition, making stockings of all colours and designs, shapes and sizes and adapted for those with or without a fireplace! The long tradition of hanging Christmas stockings from the mantelpiece dates back as far as the 4th century and they've been globally popular ever since. It's super simple to put together a Christmas stocking and they don't need to be especially expensive or extravagant to be fun, useful and full of unusual gift ideas
Originally, stockings were meant to hold five small gifts, supposedly one offering for each of the five senses! Fruit or sweets pleased the taste, perfumes or toiletries created the smell, something soft like stuffed toys or even modelling clay appeased the sense of touch, a visually stimulating gift like jewellery, and anything that produced sound for the ears, were all stuffed into one small sock. Other countries, such as the Netherlands, still use shoes instead of stockings!
When the tradition of Christmas stockings first began in Germany, kids simply hung one of their worn socks from the mantle but over time, the notion was (extremely lucratively!) developed with idea of creating stockings that were explicitly for the purpose of spreading Christmas joy. Nowadays we can buy or make stockings that are eye-catching, personalized and in some cases, as large as possible! Although traditionally hung from the mantelpiece, if you don't have a fireplace, stockings placed round the doorframe or hung in an ascending sequence from the staircase can look great.
When it comes to filling your stockings, it is vitally important to consider the recipient. It's crucial to note the recipient's personal tastes and interests when constructing their Christmas stockings. Consider what you think the person might enjoy, something that could be utilised daily or simply raise a smile! Once you've decided, pick a theme for the collection of gifts- maybe a reminiscence stocking filled with reminders of a personal jokes and memories you share!
For technology lovers, why not choose a phone or tablet cover? If they enjoy their wine, maybe a handmade bottle stopper? For fashionistas, a chic accessory like a stylish brooch could be perfect, whereas decorations such as tealight holders are great for the home lover. Simplicity is the vital for good stocking fillers, so try not to overthink your gifts; while Christmas stocking traditions are subjective to every family, they are the perfect way to explore handmade Christmas gift ideas!
