The process of growing plants like leafy vegetables without using soil as medium is called green hydroponics. This type of agriculture started in the 18th century and has been continually developed until today. In this way of farming, the medium used in growing crops are water and inert substances like perlite, gravel, coconut husks, and mineral wool.
Early research from agriculturists show that the role of soil in plant growth is to hold the foods and minerals and has no direct outcome in the growth. The continuous life cycle of the plant being cultivated is made sure with the provision of the essential factors. These factors include sunlight, water, the minerals, and carbon dioxide. Sunlight is required in order for the floras to produce chlorophyll, which gives them their green color. The minerals and carbon dioxide carried by water to the plant is used in the production of plant glucose which is in turn used as fuel source and produces oxygen in the process. At night, this process is reversed.
In an environment that the farmer could control, this process is allowed to continue. The light is provided by artificial lamps. The crop can still make the needed energy and oxygen using the artificial system. The minerals and nutrients required are provided by the fertilizers that are mixed in the water into which their roots are submerged in.
One advantage farmers can get by using this method is their control in the composition of the nutrients that the floras get. Another is the extent of control they have in fertilizing and cultivating the crops through constant monitoring. There is also no threat of infestation by pests that are normally found in the soil or stress from other weeds.
The cost of fertilization is also reduced due to the reduction of wastage. There is also a significant increase in the crop yield. Despite these advantages, there are also disadvantages that come from using this process.
For one, the initial capital for starting this project is large. Another is the difference in the number of workers that are needed to operate the project. Still another is the delicateness of the plants grown in controlled conditions where a small threat from the outside could have a great impact on the crops that include green hydroponics.
