Gretsch Guitars: The History Of These Iconic Guitars

by Joe Buxton

The Gretsch guitars are one of the most popular guitars in the world. Their manufacturing has begun in the 1930s, after 47 years since the company has been established. Their time of glory was between 1950s and 1960s. After this period, they lost a bit of their popularity because of their low quality. The construction techniques and the poor quality material had, eventually, turned them in less desirable.

Friedrich Gretsch was born in Mannheim, Germany and he moved in America in 1883s where he set up a store in Brooklyn. He worked with a lot of very well known names from the music industry. His guitar types are very popular because of their strange looks and their specific sound. They are well known by the collectors and very desirable.

The most famous and the best models are the electric ones. There are great names which can proud themselves by playing at such a guitar. The list is long and the names which appear in it are very famous. The glory time of the company was back in 1950s. That was the moment when the company received a big help from Chet Atkins, one of the greatest guitarist.

His name appeared on several instruments, making them even more famous. The instruments as: 6120 Chet Atkins hollow body or 6121 Chet Atkins solid body had brought more fame to the company. Unfortunately, their fame had decreased because of the poor quality of the materials they were made from. The poor quality of the materials it was not the only thing that made them less desirable. The construction technique was another factor that made them less desirable.

Even if their fame had decreased because of those factors, they were still searched by the collectors for their unique models. Their western look, the weird form, were something that attracted lots of people. The most valuable and collectible models are the ones from the 1954s to 1956s. The most valuable models are the ones with western ornamentation. They are searched a lot by the collectors because of their unique design.

The sparkly models are more attractive than the ones black or red. The electric guitar models have a bigger reputation than the acoustic ones. It is said that the most of them have not survived in time because of the low quality of the material and because of the construction techniques. But, that does not mean that they are not searched by the collectors.

In the 1970s there were new models introduced on the market. Because of this move, the old guitar had lost their popularity. In 1980s, because of a bad relationship with another company, this company slid into bankruptcy. Fortunately, the company was revived in 1989s by a great-great-grandson of the original former.

Gretsch guitars have a large history. In the 1950s-1960s, these instruments were the best. It has been sold hundreds of them in the entire world. The name of Chet Atkins had a lot to do with it. One of the greatest musicians of that time with one of the best manufacturer had put their hearts and souls making some unbelievable designs. Their legacy will never die.
