Five Influential Water Color Artists

by Brandi Little

The art of water coloring is subtle, but impressive. The delicate merging of paint on paper creates startling effects that evoke the mood of an entire landscape or object. Some famous water color artists have employed this technique and as a result, have made some of the most moving images in the history of art.

JMW Turner is one such artist. Born in England in 1775, Turner sought to evoke mood and the time of day by playing with light and color. His images have been highly influential, and are said to be the precursor to some of the most well-known works by the Impressionists of later decades. He died in 1851.

Turner is famous for landscape works that employ light and color in ways that suggest the time of day and the atmosphere of an entire scene. Turner sought to capture nature in all its sublime energy. The sublime, according to the Romantics, denoted the splendid and savage elements of nature and the outdoors. One of his most evocative paintings is 'Rain, Steam, Speed: The Great Western Railway' (1844).

William Blake, by contrast, only depicted images from his own, private internal world. These paintings are highly representative of his particularly reclusive nature. They show legendary icons and creatures, all of notably divine in origin. Divine elements also tend to appear in his poetry and writing. 'The Angel of Revelation' (1803-5) is a particularly strong example of this.

Paul Cezanne also managed to experiment with, and revolutionize, the art of water color painting. His technique involved the delicate overlapping of washes on canvas. He also made the paper itself an integral part of the image. He very rarely mixed colors together. Rather, he allowed pure hues to blend together on paper, complimenting them with etches of charcoal or pencil. An example is 'Still Life with Melon and Pomegranate' (1900 - 1906). He was good friends with other artists, like Monet and Renoir.

Similar innovations were happening over the Atlantic Ocean in the United States of America. Edward Hopper, an artist operating in the '20's, was a realist who wanted to show the world certain "unseen" aspects of life in the USA. His subjects are quietly introspective are rather lonely, like an abandoned cinema or railway. 'The Mansard Roof' from 1923 also evokes this distinctly sad mood.

Georgia O' Keefe was another American artist working through this exciting medium. She is known for her austere, but powerful suggestions of the American landscape, most notably that of the South West and in particular, Northern New Mexico. She wanted to depict 'the wideness and wonder of the world' through her works, and made striking paintings of rocks, flowers, shells and unusual architectural forms. A famous abstract painting is 'Blue Lines' (1916).

These five water color artists have inspired generations of new painters who wish to take the art form to new dimensions. Realism, cubism, symbolism and other ground-breaking artistic movements have found articulation in the techniques of gifted water colorists. Indeed, Turner, O'Keefe, Blake, Cezanne and Hopper are to thank.
