Some Reasons Why Christmas Puzzles Are Good Holiday Activities

by Hadley J. Jaskolski

Christmas puzzles are a great idea for people looking for a fun and quiet indoor activity for their families to do during the holiday season. There is a size to suit every group, whether it be a large one that fills a whole table (so that everyone has a side to work on), or a small one with big pieces (so the kids can have a part too). The designs are also fun, since the holiday scenes they display frequently help to foster a holiday cheer. These types of puzzles are fun and are beneficial for the mind as well.

Some of the benefits that puzzles provide include making us more alert, increasing concentration, and expanding creativity. Others are lowering heart rates and blood pressure, and developing and maintaining sharp reasoning and problem solving skills.

Puzzles provide these varied benefits because they cause the right and left hemispheres of the brain work together. The logical, chronological, rational, analytical and objective left-brain looks at parts that have to do with problem solving. The random aspects of a puzzle appeal to the creative right brain, which is intuitive and attracted to the conceptual. Because both sides work together, they remember certain aspects required for the player to put the puzzle together as quickly as possible. These useful details include the size, shape, color, and pattern of the piece(s) needed to fit in a particular section of the puzzle. Puzzles are, therefore, one of the best activities for the mind.

Putting a puzzle together improves a person's memory as well. This is true because as a person starts to assemble a puzzle by finding the first few pieces, they put forth a lot of mental effort until the image starts to take shape and they can focus on the few pieces that are left to finish out the process and complete the picture. This attention curve is similar to the learning curve needed in different activities in our lives, which is how the puzzles help reinforce memory.

The person doing a puzzle has to focus on the same scene for a long period of time to be able to find and put together all the pieces required, which can have an extremely calming effect on them. In these moments the brain blocks out anything that is not directly related to the puzzle, and concentrates exclusively on the pieces of the puzzle.

Lastly, regardless of whether it be the first or last piece of 2012 Christmas puzzles, dopamine (the chemical in the brain that regulates emotions, motivation, and concentration) is produced by the brain every time a piece is put successfully in place. This natural process is the reason why a puzzle can be so much fun for everyone who has a share in putting it together.
