How to Keep Pests Out of Your Organic Garden

Don't plant the same plants in the same places every year. The predators to that plant will already be in that location and it won't take them long to find your new plants and get to work on them. If you rotate the location of your plants, or which types of plants you plant each year, you can help reduce the amount of these dangerous elements and give your plants a better chance at avoiding them.

Lay out your garden to take advantage of natural pest aversion. Bugs are often repelled by some plants, even as they are attracted to others. If you lay out your garden so that the natural predators to your plants will want to stay away, you can save your plants from being eaten. Bug-repelling plants are often perfectly tasty to humans, so you'll also be getting some interesting edibles out of the deal. Find out which pests you have the biggest problems with to make your repellent-plant selections. If your pests include the larger, four-legged variety, there are also plants that repel these mammalian critters.

Organic gardens benefit from the existence of livestock. Bugs like potato worms are a favorite treat of chickens. If you can adopt a couple of chickens, you'll be getting a first-rate pest control system, as well as a good source of organic fertilizer. Well-tended chickens also produce high quality eggs, which you can enjoy as well. Chickens are not allowed as pets in all areas, though the list of cities that does allow them is rapidly expanding. Before you build a chicken coop, check to make sure your city doesn't prevent their ownership.

One of the hardest things about organic gardening is keeping pests and disease away. While these things are easy to kill with chemicals, they are harder to prevent with only organic solutions. Organic gardeners need to start their gardens knowing that they will lose some of their fruits and vegetables to pests; it's unavoidable. That said, the percentage should be small and manageable. Here are some ways to help you cut down on the pests while still keeping your garden chemical free.

Introducing natural predators to your garden's biggest insect problems is a good way to combat this. There are several ways to do this. You can purchase lady bugs, for example, at gardening stores and introduce them into the garden yourself. If you'd rather the bugs find their own way into your garden, plant some of the flowers they gravitate toward. Some of these plants have other good uses, too, such as being edible themselves, so you'll get two benefits for the price of one.
