Old Fashioned Wooden Toys Are More Educational Than Electronic Ones

by Chelsea Evans

Playing is important to kids particularly those that are still toddlers since this is stage that they develop their social skills, locomotive, and cognitive skills. Playthings are a tool that helps them develop these skills. Though there are many different kinds being sold in the stores, many parents prefer old fashioned wooden toys because of its benefits.

There are many kinds being sold, like electronic robots, video games, battery operated cars, and plastic dolls, but they cannot bring out the imagination of the user like a wooden toy does. These modern playthings are made to amuse and distract and does not really teach the user anything. However, a simple toy made of wood can enhance the imagination and creativity in a child.

When using those, the child is mentally and physically involve. Rather than just pressing buttons, sitting back and waiting for something to happen, they must physically manipulate the toy. Pulling, pushing, stacking, or connecting the wooden parts are very helpful in developing their skills.

Sets made of wood can improve the socials skills of a child since these can provide them with the necessary knowledge required to speak with other kids. Many of these are made to be played by both girls and boys. A playground with wooden toys can give a lot of different playing fields for different kids of both genders.

Since they are heavily oriented to their senses, the child will be able to explore the grains and the bumps on it. The texture is very different compared to a smooth piece of plastic even if the wood is sanded and painted. They also do not contain toxic substances found in plastics and it is made of natural materials thus it is safer for your children.

Modern toys contain many materials that are dangerous to the environment when thrown away, like plastic, the chemicals inside the batteries and some metallic part since they do not decay easily. Those that are made of wood can decay quickly if thrown away, while other takes decades. There are a lot of small parts involved in making these high tech and complex playthings.

Those parts can be bitten off or swallowed which could be very harmful for the child. Although plastics can last longer, mechanical things and electronics can break down easily while a wooden toy that is taken care of can last can be used by the next generation. If they have incurred some damages, you can easily repair them.

It is always a joy to watch your children having fun with a new plaything, but you need to consider the amount of toy you buy them. If a child have a lot already and knows he or she can ask for many more, they looses their value. The child can invest emotionally to the gift if he or she knows that the next one will only be given on the next occasion such as birthdays and Christmases.

Compared to sophisticated playthings which are usually complex to understand, simple ones are easier to comprehend. Children should learn in their own time and should not be rushed to learn complicated things like technology. There is time for every little thing so keep those little guys learning through old fashioned wooden toys.
