Bee Keeping Basics For Urban Areas

by Bernard Miner

More and more people in urban areas are taking up bee keeping. As well as producing delicious honey, they enjoy interacting with nature and helping the environment. Bees are being cultivated everywhere from small suburban backyards to high rise rooftops and balconies. If you're contemplating taking up this rewarding hobby, here are a few considerations.

Before investing any time or money, make sure it is legal to keep bees in your city, state or county. If you're in rented property, get your landlord's permission. Ask your neighbors if they have any objections. If someone in your area has a severe allergic reaction to bee stings, rethink your plans.

Research the various types of beehives available and choose one that suits your budget and the space available. Some hives are specifically designed for urban use. Invest in a protective suit, a smoker to calm the bees and a hive tool to separate the frames. Of course, you'll also require some bees. Chose a non-aggressive species recommended for your area.

Carefully plan the placement of the hive. Make sure there will be enough space around it to allow you to work comfortably. If the ground is not level, build a level hive platform. If nights are cold in your area, situate the hive where it will be warmed by the morning sun. To reduce the possibility of vandalism, locate the hive where it is not visible from the street.

Since bees tend to drink from the water source nearest their hive, its important to have one on your own property. You don't want your neighbor complaining about bees in her kid's wading pool. Any shallow container such as a pie pan or dog dish will do. Add some pebbles poking above the waterline so the bees have a safe place to drink from. Top up the water as it evaporates.

Urban beekeepers have to be especially considerate of others when choosing the best time to work bees. For example, you should never open a hive when people are sunbathing in the vicinity. You should always perform hive manipulations quickly and carefully to avoid disturbing the inhabitants. Honey removal should be done when neighbors are indoors.

You can avoid many common bee keeping mistakes by learning as much as you can before you start. A good guidebook for beginners can be an invaluable reference. You may also consider taking a course run by a bee keeping association. More help and advice is available from internet forums for beekeepers.
