Toronto has had a lengthy, sour rivalry from the Montreal Canadiens. This could be the most ancient rivalry inside the NHL. During that 1950 playoff series a Detroit player was seriously injured in a run-in with Toronto's Ted Kennedy, an incident that sparked even greater hatred between the two teams and their fans. The rivalry cooled significantly in 1998 when Toronto was moved into the Eastern Conference.
Since the 1990's the rivalry between Toronto and the Ottawa Senators has increased in intensity. The Canadiens hit a temporary rough patch, making them too little competition to be interesting and the Senators stepped in to fill the void. Ottawa tends to dominate the regular season while the Maple Leafs often do most of their damage to the Senators in the post-season, managing a four game sweep on one occasion.
