Understanding The Celtic Knot Meanings

by Donovan Sparks

It is highly suspect whether when inventing them, ancient Celts intended Celtic knot meanings to be a controversial subject as they are now. Much of this controversy is borne of the fact that when they were used, the knots were made to conform to the prevailing context. It then resulted that different uses yielded different meaning, depending on the use. For this reason, one cannot attach a specific meaning to a particular one.

In their early days, they were predominantly used to enhance the beauty of temples, documents and sculptures. This changed over time to present day society where their uses are virtually unlimited. Uses range from the clothing industry to the cutlery industry. Lovers of body art such as tattoo artists also borrow heavily from these beautiful works.

The designs are characterized by interlaced patterns that resemble keys, spirals, plait work, steps and braiding patterns which form rich, intricate and colourful symbols. The complex culture of the Celts and their art is based on seven main creations: mammal, man, plant, fish, bird, insect and reptile. Each kind was intended to represent a particular derivation. Even many simple symbols normally have a lot of meanings.

In Ireland, the old flags carried huge numbers of designs created out of them. It was believed by some people that the patterns repulsed dark forces. The more intricate ones were thought to pack more power.

Another common significance of many of the symbols is the belief of everlasting life. The knot art shows that the cycle of life is consistent and one's personal life is similar to a strand that is woven in the fabric of space and time. Interweaving of these knots is attributed to eternity and anything that is connected to life whether present, future or past. Every loop is held as an individual who is linked into all dimensions of life.

There are certain loops that are used to represent love between couples. These loops are closely related in design to the heart, or eternity. This symbolism has remained constant over the years. Additional patterns include triple drops, fur love, serpent love, double lines and squire symbols.

There is a particular one, triangular in shape that is very common today. It is three dimensional and has only one making. In the past, pagans used it to indicate the union of body, mind and spirit.

Another interesting figure is the Dara bond. Its shape takes after the roots of an oak tree. This tree held spiritual meaning among the Celts in the past. In the quest to make sense of the Celtic knot meanings, one has to take notice of these and other arrangements.
