The Best Way To Store Coffee Once It's Open
by Gary Stelling
It's a current trend for people to store their coffee beans in the fridge. The thing is that to keep our beans fresh we need to keep them away from moisture, heat, light and air so the people who keep them in the fridge to keep them cool are actually doing so at the expense of adding humidity and moisture, even more so if they are alway taking them in and out of the fridge often.
In this case it is much better to keep them dry than cool.
Coffee beans can be frozen if absolutely necessary but once thawed they should be ground and used as quickly as possible.
Coffee Storage Containers
You need to keep any newly opened bag of coffee beans free from it 4 main adversaries. The simplest way to keep them free from the elements is to keep them in an air tight container in a cool, dry cupboard.
This is good, but not the best for a couple of reasons. Beans excrete a gas which is why you see those one-way valves on sealed bags of coffee, they let the gas out of the bag but stop air coming in. Keeping beans in an air tight tub can trap the gas in giving it nowhere to go.
The second reason is that even though no more air is coming into the container once sealed, there is still air inside it when you close the lid, which can still affect the beans and cause them to lose freshness.
It is more expensive, but if you are able to spend a few more dollars then you can find storage containers specially designed for storing coffee beans and keeping them fresher for longer.
Some containers have valves, just like the ones you see on the coffee bags, which let the beans' gas out whilst not allowing any air in. This is an upgrade from the standard sealable containers you might currently be using and would be worth the investment.
There is a solution that goes beyond these simple valves however. Some do still use these one way valves, but they also let you create a vacuum inside by way of a pump that can expel the unwanted air. This will protect your beans from the air whilst not in use and is great at making them last much much longer
The only thing you need to be sure to do next is make sure they are kept cool and away from any bright light. i.e. in a cool dry cupboard
Storing Ground Coffee
This might be a bit controversial, but the best way to store ground coffee is in the bin, once you have used them to make a cup! Coffee coffee beans will begin to go stale as soon as they are ground, so the best approach is to grind right before brewing time. You should really make an effort to avoid grinding beans ahead of time and therefore avoid the need to store them after being ground.
