How Liposomes Are Being Used As A Bodily Delivery System
by Freida Lamb
Liposomes are composed of an enclosed lipid bilayer forming what is known as a vesicle. The bilayer is composed of phospholipids, in which the heads are hydrophilic and the tails hydrophobic, ensuring that the membrane is not permeated by aqueous solution. Inside the vesicle is a solute, hydrophilic in nature, that will not pass through the hydrophobic region of the bilayer. This effectively contains the solute and its contents.
Medically, the synthetic vesicles are most commonly utilized for the transport of drugs and genetic material within the body. Their lipid bilayer, constructed of natural phospholipids, is extremely similar to the bilayer of a cell membrane. As a result, they have the ability to fuse.
As the convergence of a liposome with a cell merges the contents of the liposome with that of the cell, these artificial vesicles create a favorable means for administering drugs. The vesicles can be assembled in such a way that they contain the drug inside them. The advantage of this method of drug delivery is that it inhibits the release of the drug and interaction with the body in unintended locations.
The transport abilities of these entities can also be extended to the role of detoxifying the body. When the body has been infused with too much of a drug, empty liposomes with a transmembrane pH gradient can be injected into the bloodstream to clean up excess drug material within the body. Enclosing the drug within the membrane by this means halts the drug from further reaction within the body.
In the same way that they transport drugs, liposomes can also be used to transport DNA. Vesicles can be packed with genetic information that is intended to be deposited within a cell. The new genetic material within the cell can alter its abilities, effectively forging a brand new genotype.
Though Liposomes are man-made, they are by no means unable to react with the body in a natural way. Their lipid bilayer is typically similar if not exactly the same as that of a cell membrane, which allows them to function with the body without resulting in a negative reaction. They have significantly increased the ability of humans to modify cellular activity, and continue to improve the way we interact with the body.
