Easy as 1-2-3: Woodworking Bench Plans
by Matt Christman
Classy, interesting furniture can be quite costly. Making your own furniture can be a more exciting and more cost efficient way of acquiring furniture. A good piece for beginners in do-it-yourself furniture to start with is a bamboo covered bench.
If this interests you, then it is better to start out with an easier project, like a simple bamboo covered bench. With this project you will learn the basics of carpentry, and can apply them to most other projects including, but not limited to, beds, bookshelves, tables etc.
Also, starting with this project is a good choice because it requires fewer of the more expensive tools required for carpentry, although it is a good idea to have them on hand so you have to do fewer things laboriously. Some of these tools include a regular manual saw, a large miter saw for cutting heavier boards, a screw gun and a nail gun.
Now, the first thing that you will need in any DIY woodworking project is a list of tools and materials. To create a bamboo-covered bench, you will need some bamboo flooring (which is, of course, synthetic, not made of organic bamboo), special wood glue for attaching the parts of the bench, a large MDF sheet (medium-density fiberboard), and a smaller MDF sheet so you can cover the legs of the bench. For the actual bench, you will need pine board (which is a prime choice for beginning woodworkers).
As always, you will need a regular saw (a manual saw), and a larger miter saw (miter saws use electricity and are used for cutting large boards and heavier pieces of wood).
Next, nail two equally spaced support stringers between. Then, nail small, cut boards in each corner to form a square. These should run perpendicular to the stringers. These will match the dimensions of the bench's legs.
The first step in the assembly of the bench is to create a box from the MDF sheets. This box will be the actual seat of the bench. Of course, this "box" should have both short and long sides.
Now, it's time to create the legs of the bench. First, measure the squares at each corner, and then create the legs from the MDF board, matching those dimensions. Next, attach the legs, and make the bond final by sealing it with the wood glue.
Pre-cut synthetic bamboo would also be an option, however, practice makes perfect and without practice you can't learn or improve.
First, lightly brush very strong glue onto the bench. Next, however you accomplish the task, place the correctly measured bamboo pieces over the bench and press them on neatly. Allow the bench to properly dry before using it for anything.
When the legs are ready, brush some light adhesive on the surface of the entire bench. Measure and cut the synthetic bamboo covering, and attach these pre-cut pieces to the bench. If you have never cut wood before, it is a good idea to leave the sawing to a miter saw. It might be a little pricier, but over the long term you will be happier with the results.
