Parenting Is A Full Time Job
by Mike Hardaway
Anyone who has a child or children knows that parenting is a full time job that takes a lot of time, patience, and energy. And yet a parent also has things that need to be accomplished in life, things that may very well benefit the family in the long run. Going back to college might very well be one of these activities and it makes things crazy sometimes.
Trying to be a diligent college student and a good parent at the same time is no job for sissies, as it will take a lot of effort. But it is possible and the two roles are by no means mutually exclusive. I have devised a handbook that will lay out what it takes and give you helpful tips to make your life as a parent and a student easier to navigate.
Finances are a big part of this as they are a big part of almost any endeavor in life. Particularly if you are a single parent you are going to have to bring in money to support your family and you are going to have to find the money to pay for college. You may have to take all sorts of jobs and side jobs. But your burden will be eased if you look at scholarships and grants that award you money that does not have to be paid back.
You can start with applying to the Federal Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA), followed by browsing on the Internet about information related to funding for students. You can also request directions to the college funding section in any local library. There, you may find a huge number of financial aids that can help you with the college fees as well as gift some bonus points for raising children alongside.
Next step is to discover the rare, but cost effective childcare, although the task may seem impossible right when you start searching. The Social service department of your local government can assist you well regarding the right place to look for low-priced childcare services and a thorough list of such providers.
'Balance' is the key word when you start with a journey like this. It is extremely rare and hardly possible to make a perfect parent as well as a perfect college student out of you, at the very same time. You must understand the intricacies of these parallel and unalike roles that you're going to play, which requires you to handle the subtle balance in the two. For this, you must be prepared by all means, physical, mental and emotional; only then can you pass the test along with your family with flying colors.
Taking care of yourself will need to be a high priority for you. Be careful to eat, sleep, and take time for recreation. You can only achieve what you need if you stay in good shape.
Raising kids and getting your degree is not easy and no one will say that it is anything but a challenge. However, the payoff at the end will be big and important for you and for them. So take it step by step and you will reach your goal and march in that graduation ceremony with your kids there to cheer you on.
