Egyptian Cuisine to Try in Sharm el Sheikh

by Catherine McCulloch

Although famous for its historic culture, famous archaeology and beautiful beaches, the Egyptian culture is also praised internationally for its delicious cuisine. From sweets to mains and of course refreshing beverages, we've rounded up a list of the top treats to try when you're in the country on your holidays.

Stuffed pigeon: We may see them as pests, but Egyptians consider pigeon to be a real delicacy. Often served at dinner parties and functions, they come stuffed with rice or 'frek', a cracked wheat, along with the lemon-based broth the pigeon is cooked in. Although not something you might normally eat, it's a wonderfully traditional dish that should be sampled when out for dinner in Egypt.

Shisha: Technically not a food or drink, a shisha is an ornate Arabian water pipe, and a very traditional and symbolic pastime. Fruit scented tobacco is 'smoked' through the pipe; Egyptians usually favour apple flavoured shisha but there is a range of flavours available including melon, orange and even coffee.

If you're in the mood for something to drink, cleanse your palette with one of their local juices. Lemon Nana is their equivalent of lemonade. Deliciously refreshing, it is also served with crushed fresh mint leaves to give you a minty after taste in your mouth. Not only that, but it's bound to wake up you if the sun is making you sleepy.

Konafah: If you've got a sweet tooth, you must try Konafah on your last minute holidays. This sweet is made of a very thin, almost noodle like pastry and has been around for a great number of years. It is made by drizzling long rows of 'pastry' mixture on a hot plate until they become dry, hard and rigid. These 'noodles' are then mixed with butter or oil and wrapped around a filling made of nuts and whipped cream before being baked and served with a fruit syrup. Be sure to end your meal with this!
