PES 2013 V FIFA 13 - Catching Or Caught Up?

by Steve Hinds

Pro Evolution Soccer or PES to the legion of fans who follow this popular footy franchise, has kept gamers glued to their screens in football heaven for the past 16 years and with the release of PES 2013 that trend looks set to continue.

Why has PES remained so popular over all these years, especially when you consider that it has had a great rival in FIFA for almost the same amount of time?

In more recent times FIFA has stolen a march over Konami and pushed PES into second place, something which FIFA itself struggled with during the early years in the last decade. So why despite playing second fiddle to another footy game do PES fans stay loyal and shell out their hard earned cash every year?

Playability - Konami's one saving grace over FIFA has always been the actual gameplay. Forget the gimmicks and the licences, this is what you play video game footy for and Konami usually nail this on the head. From year to year they change the gameplay making your new acquaintance with it easy or difficult, but always guessing what will come next.

PES has never pandered to your whims like FIFA, it has never made it easy to score or create chances. The ethos behind the PES games is to make you work hard, learn and practice each new version, so that you can truly appreciate the beauty of the game. None more so than when you win a game on the hardest difficulty for the first time with an injury time rocket into the top corner.

What we love about the PES games is the clever way Konami teaches you how to play each new iteration. You instinctively start doing things that you didn't in the previous game and you learn the new ways of the new version, almost like your fingers jump onto autopilot, but this doesn't seem to kick in until you've played for a while first.

Realism - from player likenesses to ball movement, PES has always held sway over the FIFA monstrosities. I don't mind FIFA nowadays, but I like my ball to move, not float and Pro Evo certainly comes out on top for ball mechanics.

The player movement in PES seems to be more on the money each year, except in PES 2012 when players fell over awkwardly. This aberration aside, the players move around the pitch like they're running on it, not hovering millimetres above the grass blades. This makes the gameplay feel more solid.

Player likenesses always feature much better in the PES games. You'd think that after all these years, both games would be able to get it right. But before launch date, video game magazines often run comparison charts between the two games, with identical players from both sides pitted against each other. There have been some ugly Rooney mugs in the FIFA series.

Speed - PES has generally been the quicker of the two games, too fast for some in previous years, so much so that its been called an arcade game. Konami change the setting most years, but PES 2013 is vaunted as the slowest version to date, which will help Konami focus on the new Player ID and Full Control introductions.

In the latest game Konami have included a speed setting which allows you to control the game speed. You have five settings to choose from, so if you still fancy bombing down the wings like PES games of yesteryear you can.

Licenses - PES has never been able to compete with FIFA when it comes to the realism of player names, team names and football strips or stadia, because FIFA has always owned the rights.

It has bred a whole online culture of editing with talented PES fans creating options files which when downloaded from the internet and uploaded into the game resolves the license anomalies.

As I've not played FIFA for a while I don't know how good their editing system is, but within Pro Evo you can now create realistic player faces, names, kits and even new stadiums with adverts splashed around the stands.

Innovation - both PES and FIFA introduce new buzz words every year, which describe the new features they're putting in their games. PES usually updates the artificial intelligence and for PES 2013 is bringing in Player ID and Full Control which are supposed to work together to allow players to mimic the real mannerisms of actual players. So you should see Ronaldo and Messi run, dribble, pass and shoot like they do in real games.

Two Player - there's only so long you can play against a machine before you yearn to destroy another human being with your footy skills, bring on the two player and let the insults begin.

Everybody who has ever played against a mate will know the joy of a strike into his top corner and the despair of him chipping the ball over your onrushing goalkeeper and into your empty goal. Friendships have been put on hold for the duration of these games before.

The longevity of PES games is tied into two player battles and online gaming, much like it is for other computer games. You get the most out of PES and see its strength best against another human player.
