How To Make Teeter Totters

by Janelle Burnett

Teeter totters or other words known as seesaws, are one of the most fun things that a child will play with when he is still young. Everyone has probably experienced playing with a seesaw in the school or park playground during their childhood. So for parents who would want to give their kids the same experience, here is a simple way to build something like this.

First of all, the materials that one will need when building this thing would be some lumber, a hammer, a drill, a few big pieces of screws, and a pipe. Now these are the basic materials that one will be needing in order to make the seesaw. Once all of the materials are gathered, then the first step would be to create the blue print.

After creating the initial design and plan, the next part would be to cut up the pieces of wood and think of how big the seesaw should be. Now the wood should be split into three parts which are the two foundations and of course the main plank. The best shape for the foundations to be in would actually be a triangle because triangles tend to be able to hold the ground better than other shapes.

Now take out the drill and start drilling a hole into the middle of the big plank and the top portion of the two triangular planks. One has to make sure that the hole that he will drill is as big as the metal pipe because he will be slotting the pipe inside there. Once the pipe is already in, then use some bolts in order to make sure that the metal pipe stays in.

Now one should start mixing some quick drying cement which will be used later for sticking the foundations to the ground. He must make sure that the cement mix is still quite wet before he puts any of it on the foundations. Once the cement has been placed on the foundations and the ground, just wait for it to dry and the seesaw will be steady.

The last part to add would of course be the metal handles that are supposed to be present on both ends of the seesaw. These metal handles can be bought at any hardware store available. When the metal handles are bought, one must hammer and screw the handles into the wood so that it stays.

The last thing to do would be to check if everything is in proper order. Test the seesaw to see if it actually works the way that it is supposed to be. A final reminder would be to make sure that everything is screwed in tightly otherwise it will be extremely dangerous for children to play on it.

So basically, that is a very simple way on how to make homemade teeter totters. As one can see, it is actually quite easy to make because it does not take that much work. So if parents would want their kids to know what it is like to play on this fun contraption, just build one near the house.
