In order to catch the maximum amount of fish, be sure that the hook is always sharp. If your hook is not sharp, the fish will be able to grab the bait without the hook sticking. Sharpen your hooks prior to each fishing trip so as to not waste time while you're on the water.
The decision to fish down or uphill depends on the fish you are catching and their migration patterns. For instance, during the springtime, always cast uphill allowing you to get in front of the fish. When the fish are swimming downstream in the fall, you would cast your lure "downhill".
Another tip for fishing is to stay relatively quiet while you are on the water. Everyone has heard that loud voices can scare away fish, and while this is slightly exaggerated, making a lot of noise on the surface, particularly disturbing the surface, can indeed spook the fish.
Limit the amount of fish you catch. While fishing can be a great, relaxing hobby, it is generally considered very bad form to catch more fish than you intend to eat or share. If you are simply catching for sport, then you should release the fish you catch back into the water. This will help you to enjoy the sport and leave fish for others.
Look for nearby fish when you're deep sea fishing. For example, you may notice wood or debris floating on the surface. You might even see substantial game fish swimming around. If you notice seagulls feasting on smaller fish in an area of the water, larger fish are probably swimming just below.
