Ideas For Safeguarding Your Garden From Bugs

by Vanessa Summer

If the only thing that was required was putting some seeds in the ground and watching them grow, planting a garden would be simple; regrettably, it's a a bit more complicated than that. Right after the initial hard work is completed and your plants are beginning to grow, pests will appear out of nowhere and start attacking your plants. If you keep your garden really clean, the pests will be kept away. Even though a compost pile shouldn't trigger any problems, having garden debris and overgrown areas can attract pests.

Earthworms usually are an excellent way to eliminate bugs from your garden because they keep the soil open to air and water with their nonstop stirring of the soil. Several types of birds, such as robins and sparrows, prey on typical insects. Some creatures, like the ladybug, do a good deed by feeding on damaging insects. Instead of looking for ways to get rid of toads, it is best to welcome them as they are able to eat many insects in one sitting. But if your garden is appealing to birds and toads, you will find there are fewer of the more menacing insects.

Birds will probably hang all over your yard if you have a birdhouse, sprinkle some grain in early spring, and have a place for water. For making your backyard attractive to toads, you need to supply a nice shady area. Underneath the shade of a plant, you can place a few stones, with some damp leaves, would be a nice spot for a few toads. The toads would certainly enjoy the cool shade in the sizzling summer and enjoy feasting on insects during the evening. How the bugs work is what decides which of the two general classes of insects they belong to.

Grasshoppers and caterpillars are in the kind that gnaws, and chews pieces of the plant. Plant lice and mosquitoes, illustrations of scale pests, affix themselves to plants and then suck all the fluid out of them. The gnawing group could be poisoned with a spray applied to the plant, which they take into their bodies with the plant. Or the insects can be attacked directly with insecticides, that are sprayed onto the plants to fall on the insects. Both techniques will probably eliminate the insects. Those who have gardens wonder what insect is doing what damage, and this can normally be told by what has been done, or by observing the insect.

You can be as good as assured that a cutworm is actually at work if the stalk of a tender plant has been cut clean off. Should you ever see a caterpillar that is grayish striped, it most likely is a cutworm. They're not easy to see since they rest during the day and only come out to work at night. Use paper or tin collars to safeguard your flowers and plants. Plant lice are more widespread and are commonly green in color but can also be yellow, red, or brown. Since they attach themselves to the plant, they're not difficult to locate.
