How To Survive In the Wilderness: Backpacker Survival Tips

by Nick Bucek

Backpacking may never become a matter of wilderness survival for you, especially if you are careful in your planning. Still, getting lost or twisting an ankle far from any road is always a possibility. In any case, learning a few new things from time to time is a great way to make your trips safer and more interesting. With that in mind, here are a few random survival tricks and skills based on my own experience.

Syrup is made late in the winter season and early in spring from maple and birch trees. However, it can drain a great deal of energy to get in a wilderness survival situation. In spite of this, you can get a few hundred calories every day simply by drinking maple or birch sap. Obtaining it can be as easy as breaking off the ends of twigs and putting something underneath to trap the dripping sap. I've obtained one quart a day for a couple of days from one cut branch.

Regarding cooking, I've cooked in containers created from birch bark. There are two main approaches. One is to drop fire-heated rocks straight into the liquid until boiling point. The other is to use the pot right over the fire. If the fire doesn't go higher than the level of the liquid, the pot birch bark pot won't burn up given that the heat is conducted away immediately by the liquid inside.

Your light jacket can effectively turn into a winter coat just by filling it full of dried grass. It's better still should you have another jacket such as your raincoat, so you're able to put the grass or leaves between the two. Generally, it will be more effective to think about ways to modify what you currently have rather than try to make survival clothes.

You will find numerous little ideas that can help you make wilderness travel fascinating and less dangerous. In case you aren't keen on practicing survival tactics, why don't you at least read several survival tips occasionally? Sooner or later, you might recall something that can help save your life.
