Magnetic Field Coils And Purposes

by Thelma Kent

Magnetic field coils produce vector forces which can be used and adapted in various ways. They provide a form of energy when an electric current runs through a metal coil. They are spiral and loop shaped and by running magnetic friendly metals through their center core, the resultant effect is the production of a stronger forces which can be utilized for specific functionalities.

If the current is disabled so the field force drops to zero and is of no use. The pattern of the field runs through the center and is its most strongest in the middle. It creates an invisible shape of almost uniform parallel lines. On the outside of the coil the forces are considerably weaker and of next to no use.

Examples of products that make use of electromagnets are motors, generators and loudspeakers. In the motor car industry the component used is called a solenoid. It forms part of the starter motor that gets your car started when you turn the key to the on position.

Solenoids are helix shaped and resemble a spiral stairwell. In order to generate larger force fields within the solenoid metals that are ferromagnetic can be used. They are termed as such because of their inherent ability to be magnetized.

Metallic materials occurring naturally in nature have these inherent qualities. Namely, their innate ability to supply force fields. Some of these metals that can be adapted to produce a pulling or pushing effect are cobalt, nickel and iron. They are said to be good conductors and distinguish themselves from other metals because of these inherent qualities.

In order to make the force effect of the wound spiral like metal stronger, these metals are passed through the core or center to enhance the quality and strength of the electromagnet. Electricity or current running through any piece of conductive material produces these unseen forces. A component such as these produces two poles, a positive pole and its equivalent negative pole.

For those working in this field it is known that two positive poles when brought together will repel each other. As their invisible fields are brought closer together so the repulsive forces between them increases. In contrast to this, by bringing a positive and negative pole together the two poles have an attracting effect on one another and will stick together.

This phenomena of the forces of attraction and repulsion are harnessed to provide functionality to devices that we use on an every day basis. For example, a music tape with recorded music on it has a thin film of magnetic material on which the recording is imprinted upon. This development gave way to using this same technology on hard drives on a personal computer. It was developed as a means to store information and to be read back by an optical laser.

The solenoid uses this current to generate magnetic fields which are used to provide services or functionality to the other working parts of the motor. Some of these include the running of switches such as those that turn on the windscreen wipers and other mechanical devices that the automobile utilizes.

magnetic field coils are essential to existing technologies today. Since the 1800s and the industrial revolution, this device often only seen and worked with by technologists, have been the mainstay of nearly every mechanical apparatus to date.
