Why A Stuffed Bear Is So Lovable
by Alyssa Riggs
Many of us had a stuffed bear or two as a child. We often gave them names, dressed them up, had tea parties with them and even cuddled up with them at bedtime. They carry special memories with them and this is why we often find ourselves keeping them well into our adult lives. Children love their bears but there are many adults who love them too and the number of people collecting them grows all the time.
Bears captured hearts from the first time they appeared. Of course, the look of bears has changed considerably over the years. The first ones made had beady, black, boot button eyes, long snouts and jointed limbs. Now the eyes are made from glass and plastic, the snouts have shrunk, bodies are more cuddly and they are cuter and softer to handle. Of course those old bears are highly sought after by collectors.
Over the years the materials used to cover these bears and their stuffing has also changed. Initially stuffing consisted of wood wool, kapok, straw and cotton batting. Synthetic materials used today are far softer. Instead of mohair, coverings today are made of synthetic polyester fibers.
Teddy bears have made their mark over the years. In America they have become part of political history. They first appeared as the result of a cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to shoot a cub. Since then, they have appeared on many important occasions. After the sinking of the Titanic they were given out as gifts to those who were mourning. When the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic was made, they were used as mascots. Nowadays, teddy bears appear in museums and at festivals worldwide.
Teddy bears have also made an impact in the literary world. Winnie the Poo has been a favorite for bedtime stories through the years. Rupert Bear was a very popular character in comics and who can forget Paddington, the polite immigrant who tried so hard to get things right but always ended up in trouble.
The gift of a bear is always appreciated. Children love to cuddle them. They find comfort in hugging them and talking to them. They can also be given as gifts for special occasions like graduation or Valentines Day as an expression of love. It is often possible to ask for customization to add a unique touch such as adding embroidery or special items of clothing.
One of the best ways to choose bears today is to go online. There is an immense variety available, from those which are suitable for small children to those which can be added to collections. Whatever purpose you want them for, you will be able to find exactly what you want. You must just make sure that you select a reputable supplier so that you will not be disappointed by unreliable service or poor quality. One way of doing this is to read customer reviews.
A stuffed bear has a special place in many hearts. It is a wonderful toy to have when you are a child and difficult to let go of when you become an adult. In fact many adults still have them around to remind them of their childhood. They are also found in many collections and have even found their way into museums worldwide. They have continued to make their mark in the world since the first one appeared and this is not likely to change in the future.
