Cities Expanding Thanks to a Bike for Commuting
by Rob Sutter
When you're talking about cities and how they grow, it seems like trends happen for a number of reasons. Maybe a certain type of performer can be seen and others gain wind of this, allowing them to take part in similar activities so that they can direct as many eyes to them as humanly possible. It's also important to make note of the kind of spark which can create expansion. A bike for commuting or two have definitely seen this spark and the results are very much tangible.
The DC Street Blog was one that brought the importance of a bike for commuting and the city in an article. When I was younger, I always thought that there were only a couple of reasons as to why people rode bikes in such crowded areas. I was always under the impression that people either didn't have licenses or they didn't have the money to put down on a car. Little did I know that there other reasons for this that could be stated by authorities on the matter, Linus Bike included.
What kinds of additions are these areas going to receive in terms of biking, you may ask yourself? Well, items such as bike lanes and a number of bike-share locations will certainly be seen. According to the article, a total of twelve bikes can be stationed in one parking space, both without feeling cramped and allowing a friendlier infrastructure. I think that these kinds of utilities will only come into fruition, however, if there are enough people clamoring for reasons to go out and travel by bicycle.
In New York especially, there seems to have been quite a spike for merchants. Since these lanes were created, there has been a 50 percent increase in the business made, which probably wouldn't have occurred if the aforementioned lanes were not created. I believe that this, more than anything, should encourage people to stop using motor vehicles as much. It not only promotes a more sustainable environment for all of us to thrive in but regular drivers may wind up saving more money in the process.
I am a big fan of these networks and various other utilities coming about. Those who cruise about on their bicycles are easily going to be the ones who benefit the most from cities deciding to build these new additions. However, who's to say that they have to be the only ones who are able to reap the benefits? New cyclists can come about and, as a result, they can make use of these new paths and stations so that their traveling experiences are made easier.
