Doing A Porcelain Restoration Easily

by Abbie Johnson

Plates, pots, food containers, and other kitchenware are all made up a fragile material called porcelain. Of course since this kind of ceramic material is fragile, then it can break apart if not properly handled. So just in case this sort of thing may happen, here is a step by step guide to porcelain restoration.

Now for this type of repair, the proper tools and materials are to be used in order to be successful. The main materials that one would be needing would actually be clamps and clips that can be used to hold the kitchenware. Masking tape and even modeling clay can be used in order to hold the pieces together.

If one would want to repair some big plates or small saucers, then he would need to have clamps or clips to hold them together. Basically, it should be held together with these clamps so that one would know where to put the glue mix. When it comes to repairing cups or glasses, one will not be able to make use of the clamps or clips because of the shape, so it would be better to hold it together with masking tape instead.

For cylinder shaped objects, maybe modeling clay would make a good place to put them. Clips and tape might not be able to hold the kitchenware together long enough for the fixer to apply the glue. So another option would be to use clay to hold it instead as it would be able to hold the broken thing still.

When this is finished, the next thing to do would be to create the mix. All one would be needing is some epoxy glue, a bit of resin, and some hardener. One must mix these three ingredients together to form a fast hardening type of glue substance that can patch back the broken object together.

Once the glue is applied on the broken part, wait for it to dry up. Once it is dried up, expect there to be some residue of the glue that has become hardened. Now these residues should be cleaned away with some acetone because if these hardened pieces are consumed by people, it could lead to some big complications.

So when the entire process is done, one must know that before the broken object can completely be healed, it should be left alone for about a week. Using it right away will give it an even bigger risk for it to break because it is still fragile. So always remember to leave the object stuck together for the whole week so that the glue mix will be able to work its way and help the broken pieces hold itself together for a very long time.

So for those who own porcelain material, this is how to do a porcelain restoration. The only thing to remember would be that if an object breaks, it will never be as strong as it used to be because there has already been previous damage. So after an incident like this, one must be extremely careful with their damaged plates or kitchenware.
