Landscape Tips For New Home Owners

by Johnathan Black

A beautiful home requires time, patience and a little hard work, and it all begins in your front and back yards. Curb appeal is the key to creating a house which stands out, but you need to know what you're doing before you start. Read on for some simple tips to get you started.

If you plan on staying put, buy smaller plants instead of larger plants. This helps you save money on your landscaping costs. You will have to wait a few seasons for the plants to come to full size, but it is worth saving the extra money if you are sticking around.

Lose the tape measure. Unless you are planting a vegetable garden where you need to have to order, stay away from measured spacing. A row of plants equally spaced in a row looks neat and orderly - and completely unnatural. For a flowing and natural look to your landscape, vary the spacing and types of plants you choose.

Take the time to get rid of weeds, and debris each and every day. If you allow the weeds to grow, and the debris to build up, you are going to have a lot more work to do when you do decide to take the time to tend to it.

Trim your plants regularly if you want them to stay healthy and keep growing. Depending on which plants you have, there is a right season for trimming. Usually, you will have most of your trimming to do toward the end of the winter so that your plants are ready to blossom in the spring.

If you plan on doing a landscaping or gardening project during the spring months, try planting bulb plants like snowdrops for the optimal flower solution. Snowdrops are a great flower for landscaping projects since they are easy to grow and can even be seen sprouting through the snow in the later winter months.

You may want to include a vegetable garden in your landscaping plan. Plant marigolds along the edges of your garden to prevent pests from snacking on your young vegetable plants. Rabbits do not like the scent of marigolds and will look elsewhere for munchies. The marigolds bloom all summer and add a bright splash of color to your yard.

As you can see, there are a lot of simple things that you can do to seriously impact the appeal of your home to those driving, walking or just stopping by. It is the first thing people see and good landscaping can vastly improve the value of your home.
