Allowing Mario the Luxury of Endurance Training

by Rob Sutter

Video game characters tend to come and go in terms of popularity but Mario's marathon man-like status is something that can't be denied. He's been in the gaming world since the 80's, which makes him one of the few icons that has not had his popularity shot down over the course of time. The public still identifies with him, from what I've seen, as well. Mario definitely stands as one of the oldest gaming personalities, though, so who's to say endurance training can't help him now?

Mario may not stand to be the quickest character in the world - others could make the claim just as much - but he's been the most consistent over the course of time. He's performed well when it comes to his games and there's not a truly bad one to point out. His legacy has been handled with care and I wish the same can be said for other characters in the gaming world. When you look at the entire body of work, Mario's is a tough one to match.

Over the course of time, though, Mario seemed to have slowed down his once-rigorous activity. Even looking at Mario, he doesn't look like the kind of person who you'd expect to be a top runner. With a rotund physique that would look silly on just about anyone else, he seems to be better suited as a football team's water boy than anything else. Mario is a classic case of looks being deceiving, though, and it goes to show in his actions.

Mario may not have been the fastest person in the world but endurance training can help to keep up the level of consistently he has proudly showcased. People can train as much as they want but there has to be a sense of commitment in order for results to show themselves. Events along the lines of Spartan Race show endurance well, since these competitions have obstacles that people have to traverse through. While they may jostle a number of nerves, a sense of bravery can help competitors through and Mario has that aspect locked.

Take a moment to think about turtles in video games: they wouldn't seem like such terrifying creatures in real life, right? For Mario, though, they may just be some of the most villainous creatures one could imagine. If these likenesses were incorporated into endurance training for Mario, it would serve nothing less than motivation for him to go forward. Mario's legacy is one of the most storied in gaming but who's to say that it has come to an end anytime soon?
