Beautifying And Enhancing Natural Spaces With Wild Bird Feeder Units

by Debra Garrison

Nature lovers know and appreciate the value of having plants and animals around. Wild birds are for one a pleasure to watch as they hover, swirl and perch at their own leisure. A wild bird feeder is one garden feature that helps to create such a setting.

Areas that are designed to attract wild birds can be found in many gardens. They often comprise feeders that are designed to be attractive to the birds as well as hold the food they love. The feeders can be man-made or commercially made depending on the tastes, needs and desires of the individual.

Feeding devices built for untamed birds are available commercially but they may also be hand made by the garden designer or owner. When purchasing these types of feeding devices there are two major considerations to bear in mind. These are the durability of the item and its impact on the environment. Material such as clay and wood are traditionally known and preferred for their environmentally friendly reputation but synthetic material is known and preferred for its durability.

Making the bird feeding unit yourself does not have to be difficult. It can be as simple as finding an appropriate transparent bottle, piercing holes in its side and hanging it from a tree. The fact that the bottle is transparent bottle will make the feed visible to the birds. The holes should be large enough so that the feed becomes accessible but do not fall out. More elaborate home made feeders can be made by craft savvy designers and home owners.

The main aim of having a feeder of this type installed is to attract birds. This means therefore that thought must be given to the position of the device. One of the first things to look at is the area that the birds are already using as a gathering point. Installing a feeding device in such an area will encourage continued visits and should also lead to an increase in the number of birds that visit. A branch on a tree that is frequented by the birds is a great spot, for instance. Be careful though, to ensure that it is not placed so high that it cannot be refilled.

Consider also the type of feed that you will use. Remember that these birds are untamed and so be careful about the type of feed that is placed in the device. The best thing to fill the device with, would be the things that the birds already eat in the wild. These include worms and seeds of various types.

Feeding these untamed birds is sometimes economical as the seeds may be found in your backyard many times. It is just a matter of gathering them and placing them in the feeder. The type of feed you select will also be heavily reliant on the type of birds you are trying to attract. Do some research to determine which bird prefers which type of feed.

There are numerous reasons to incorporate a wild bird feeder feature in a garden or natural area. Just as numerous are the benefits that can be derived from having such a feature. Installing one in your garden or green space is likely to make the space a better place for all users.
