Making Your Own Unique Bird Feeders

by Estela Bolton

With summer in the air and a flurry of outdoor activity, many have garden ornaments, and creative ways of decorating outdoor spaces. Along with outdoor chimes and dangling plants why not decorate with unique bird feeders? It is a very simple, quaint and classic way of adding an element of charm and character to any home.

While there are many home decor and gift-shops that offer them for sale, making your own add elements of personality and uniqueness not found with store bought items. This provides the opportunity to select colors or styles appropriate for specific homes. For instance a country atmosphere might be just right for a birdhouse in an old white or blue shoe concept.

Cups and saucers might serve best in modern or country settings, while a house in a shoe or boot would work best in country. The cup at the top serves as feeder, while the bowl at the bottom is for water or even a bird bath. Car headlight lenses can also be used, attached to chains. The light at top serves as decoration, while all others are feeders.

Discarded license plates made into houses, and hung by chains adds an element of uniqueness to certain homes. Think about household items that can be made into a feeder. Almost anything can be adapted for use. For instance even those things not originally meant for use as a feeder can be used, this includes outside bowls, planters, and stake decorations. Put a little feed in them and they make an instant feeder. Coke bottles filled with feed, and hung to a tree make perfect feeders.

Feed can also be placed inside pine cones and hung from homes or on a tree. Hanging ornaments with places for feed, attached to outside hooks, is also a good idea. Not only will this idea add decoration to homes, it will also serve in feeding the neighborhood birds.

Don't forget about old discarded toys. Toy cars and vans and other toy items make good bird houses. Toys would also work well as a craft that children can be involved in making. Also, girls with small items, such as little tea-sets can use them as bird-feeders. They can be made by attaching them to fixtures and then connecting them to trees. Also remember old grandfather can be used, as can the frames of old gaslights. Just don't forget to remove prior parts before converting to a birdhouse.

Small wooden or ceramic planters are another great idea, as are old watering buckets, a plate glued to a stake, feeders made from gourds, and old wooden thanksgiving turkey or rooster decorations. Ducks, pigs, cows or other animals meant as outdoor decorations can also be converted into feeders. A large hole can also be cut out of the top of a log. The log can be decorated with etching, flowers, or branches, and feed placed inside.

Using simple household items, such as cups or saucers, and a little imagination creates the perfect feeder that fits any home style. So before throwing old shoes, dishes, or home decor items in the trash, think about a new bird feeder.
