Simple Guide On Repairing Rotten Timber Windows In The Right Manner

by Lisa Allen

Windows out of wood are bound to decompose after some time. Even if it's properly weatherproofed, in time the seal can be damaged by rain, wind and other elements. It's important that you right away remove any part that has rotten. Fret not because the following is a simple DIY guide on repairing rotten timber windows.

Look for soft portions on the frame by poking around it with a screwdriver. With the same tool, start to chip away the damaged sections. In working on a large area, it's easier to do it using a chisel and mallet, or sometimes a hand saw. To make the repair less noticeable afterward, cut using angled edges instead of straight ones.

See to it that you remove everything that's not supposed to be there. As a general rule of thumb, it's recommended that you cut away about 0.8" around the rotted area, and that means you have to remove small portions of sound wood as well. They may already be on the early stages of decomposition, so you also need to get rid of them as earlier as possible.

The next step involves filling in the gap on the frame. A small gap can be easily filled with wood putty. In mixing the filling material you prefer, follow the directions on the packaging. Sometimes you have to drill tiny holes in the structure to allow the filling material to adhere to the surface firmly.

Use another piece of timber when filling a lager portion of the structure. By holding it next to the gap on the frame, you can trace the shape using a pencil. Cut the wood using a saw. It's much better to come up with a larger piece than the gap. Such can be easily trimmed with the help of a plane or sandpaper till it fits perfectly.

To help secure the wood onto the gap in the frame, sometimes you may also have to use screws or wooden pegs together with glue. Allow everything to dry up completely for at least 24 hours before sanding, whether you have used a filling material or a piece of timber glued to the area.

The last few steps on this easy DIY guide on repairing rotten timber windows involve making the repair blend in. Put a coat of primer and allow to completely dry up. Add a coat of paint in the same color as the rest of the structure. There are times you need to re-paint the whole frame to make it as seamless as possible. Put 2-4 waterproof sealant coats.
