Should you buy a classic car?

by Joseph A. Swift

Lots of people opt to buy classic cars for a whole variety of reasons. The main reason that people choose classic cars is for their sleek designs, the history behind them, the attention to detail in their construction and sometimes for their speed. Many modern cars will actually be faster than some classic cars and more efficient with fuel, yet ask any classic car owner and they'll tell you that there is something about classic cars that can't be found with modern cars.

Making the decision of whether to buy a classic car is one that shouldn't be made on a whim. There are several factors that need to be taken into consideration before parting with your money. The first thing to consider is how you plan to use your car. Do you plan to use your car every day or just on the odd occasion? Older cars are often unreliable, so if you plan to use your car as your main mode of transport, be prepared for breaking down. Not only is breaking down an inconvenience, regular trips to the garage will cost you.

Modern cars experience depreciation in value pretty much from the moment it is bought from new. This makes buying a modern car a bad investment in the long term. Some modern cars depreciate faster than others, but pretty much all modern cars do experience this. Many classic cars experience the reverse of this. Because they are rare, some classic cars experience an increase in value over time, making them a great investment (as long as they are kept in good condition).

Insuring a classic can be surprisingly cheap compared to insuring a modern car. In fact, with some cars it will be a fraction of the cost. Many insurance companies will not insure drivers under the age of 25, so for younger drivers, owning a classic car won't be possible for a few years! Insurance premiums with classic cars can be further reduced by opting for a limited mileage policy.

Any car built before 1973 can benefit from breaks on road tax. Because the car is officially a 'classic car', you are not required to pay road tax. It should be noted however, that you would still be required to display a tax disc. It really depends on how you plan to use your classic car when determining whether it will be a suitable option for your specific needs. However, buying a classic car isn't always about being sensible!
