A Dog Trainer's Advice on How to Raise a Happy, Obedient Dog

by Dirk Gruenberg

One of the most important parts of a dog's life is his training. Even though we, as humans, might tend to want to treat our puppy like a child, this would not be in our best interest.

Living together will require you to make compromises. Among others, your dog will have to be taught to behave appropriately. And dog obedience training will play a major part in his education.

Beginning with house training: House training will probably be the first thing you want to teach your dog. You can achieve this by following two rather easy steps. First, you need to set up a living space for your dog inside your residence.

Why? Well, dogs are genetically wired to do their best to keep their living area clean. This area can be in any part of the house; where exactly is up to you.

The next step is to allocate a space for your dog to do his business. Bear in mind that you need to keep bringing him to the same spot until he recognizes it as the place for his business. The same goes for his living place. Just take him to it repeatedly until he gets it.

Your dog likes biting? When puppies nibble and bite it doesn't really seem to matter, after all they are still little. However, as they grow older and carry this behavior into adulthood, it stops being cute. In fact, it will hurt a lot and things might get chewed up and destroyed. So stop this behavior while he is young and you still can.

Here's a simple way to make him stop biting you: Yell "ouch" loudly and turn away from him. The "ouch" will get his attention, he might be scared for a moment, and the being ignored will send a clear message. Most likely, he will then learn to stop biting.

Your dog is barking? With this issue it is important to let your dog know that his behavior leaves a lot to be desired. Most importantly, be assertive when telling him not to bark. Use the sound of your voice to get the message across.

Always keep in mind: By training your dog properly, both you and your dog will benefit and you will build a lot of rapport. Your friendship will be so much the better for it - it will be well worth its while.
