Tips And Information About DIY Guide On Repairing Rotten Timber Windows

by Robert Colwell

Timber windows can rot from moist weather. If you love in an area where it always rains, you should check your windows for rot. Moisture from snow can also cause your wooden windows to weaken. If you find some decay on your frames, you can perform this DIY guide on repairing rotten timber windows.

Examine your window frames for deterioration and if you find decayed areas, you can use a screwdriver or chisel to remove the decomposing parts. A hammer can come in handy for tougher wood rot. Get rid of all the rot until you expose healthy yellowish wood. Stop chiselling at your window once you reach firm wood.

Brush off dust from the area after you eliminate the rotten parts. Prepare your resin and mix it with water or a hardening formula. The package should come with a hardening formula. Read the instructions on the label before trying to prepare the resin. You may have to let the mixture sit for a while to condition it for application.

You can also use ready-made epoxy fillers that are in liquid form. Apply the resin or liquid epoxy to the hollow area that you chipped away at. Add resin or epoxy until you fill out the empty space. Mould the mixture into the right shape with a putty knife. Make sure the shape looks like the original wooden frame.

After applying the resin, let it dry completely. Check the sticky label regarding the recommended drying time. Some mixtures require 24 hrs to dry while others only need 10 minutes to dry. When the resin dries on your window casing, you can sand the mended area to make it level and smooth. Make sure the window will fit into the frame.

When you are done rubbing down the window, proceed to apply paint primer or a stain. Make sure your wood stain or paint has the same color as the rest of the windows. Apply another layer of paint when the primer dries. Add a 3rd coat and then let the paint dry before applying a water sealant to the frame.

After the initial layer of sealant dries, you can add a 2nd one and then a 3rd. Follow this DIY guide on repairing rotten timber windows if you cannot find a window repairman right away. Getting your broken window fixed will decrease the spread of decay and prevent moisture from damaging the rest of your window frame.
