How to avoid puppy mills

by Kathleen Columbo

If you are interested in getting a puppy for yourself, then there are many different avenues open for you. These include pet stores where you can investigate about the puppy you want, then there are various puppy breeders, where you can get all information about the puppy which you are thinking of adopting. However the best places to go to if you want to buy a puppy is to a puppy breeder.

This may not be as difficult as you might think as there are large numbers of puppy breeders which you can easily find. There are few things which you might want to know before going to a puppy breeder to get your very own canine companion.

The first of these is to decide which type of puppy you want to have. Most puppy breeders specialize in one or two different breeds only. So if you're looking for a Labrador puppy, then going to a Beagle puppy breeder won't get you any nearer your goal.

After you have decided the type of puppy you want then it is just a, matter of narrowing down your choices of puppy breeders to a few that breed the type of puppy that you need.

The next thing to do is to look at the premises of the breeder; this is to ensure that you are not getting your puppy from a well disguised puppy mill. You need to investigate and find out as much information about the breeder before getting a puppy from that breeder; although most of the puppy breeders are genuine but there are some who are running puppy mills in the guise of being professional breeders.

One of the biggest reasons why you would want to avoid a puppy mill is because you can never be sure about the health of the puppy that you get from a puppy mill. Besides the condition in which the dogs are kept in a puppy mill are disgraceful and completely inhumane. These place are just concerned about getting the most out of their dogs or puppies and for them sanitation, health and hygiene rarely matter.

The other thing that you would need to look at is the character of the puppy breeders. If they really care about their puppies they would ask you as many questions as you have for them regarding the puppy you are going to buy, as they would be trying to make sure that you have the ability to take care of the dog that you are going to adopt.

This is perfectly normal and is a trait shared by reputed dog breeders. After all reputed dog breeders do not want their puppy to go into the hands of a person who is indifferent about his puppy's health and mental well being. As a matter of fact all reputed breeders would want you to discuss how you are going to maintain your newly owned puppy and how much you can do to accommodate it into your lifestyle.
