John Jenkins Miniatures

by Nick Simms

Toy soldiers from John Jenkins are collectible pieces that have photograph like detail. Toy soldiers are figurines that represent a number of personalities. They can be a replica of an actual toy soldier or they can be representations of civilians or personalities from different cultures. A toy soldier can be a hand crafted figurine or can be as simple as an inexpensive plastic figurine. These have been a popular toy, and later collectible since late in the 1800's.

Kids have played with various forms of toy soldiers for centuries. But metal toy soldiers first gained popularity early in the 1900's. In the early 20th century, companies first created affordable toy soldiers in larger quantities. This made them available to a larger group of children both because of access and because of price.

In the late 1940's, plastic toy soldiers starting becoming popular. By the 1950s, the familiar bags of plastic green army men had become a favorite toy. Kids of this generation grew up playing with both metal and plastic toy soldiers because both were readily available.

In the mid 1960's, new laws about toy safety impacted every part of the toy industry. These laws spread internationally and considerably changed the toy soldier market. One new safety law banned dangerous materials in children's toys including lead - the main component of many metal toy soldiers at the time.

In the 1960s and 70s, the toy soldier market declined. There was a much lower demand for any model soldiers at all. As a response, toy soldier manufacturers re-worked and revived the metal toy soldier. New metal toy soldiers were made from a safe material called alloy. These were a hit with adult collectors who had played with toy soldiers as children. These new metal toy soldiers were first launched in the 1970s but these figurines experienced a slow climb to popularity and weren't truly successful until the 1980s.

In the 1980's, toy soldiers were modernized. Instead of the stiff two pose soldiers of the early 1900's, model soldiers were posed in the heat of battle with guns blazing, wounded soldiers, charging figurines, and more! This brought the figures to life and they were more appealing to customers than the unimaginative poses of the early toy soldiers. Toy soldiers also became very lifelike with extremely authentic and true to life representations of soldiers' features and clothing.

John Jenkins Designs has a great selection of these extremely detailed collectible toy soldiers. Before John Jenkins started making toy soldiers, he worked in a number of other design related jobs. John Jenkins has collections of toy soldiers representing different battles, time periods and cultures. Their toy soldiers come in 2 sizes. Their miniature figurines are 28mm. Other figurines are 54mm, the standard size for toy soldiers. John Jenkins toy soldiers, air crafts, and houses are from different times, battles, and countries.

John Jenkins collections are organized by century. Toy soldiers from the 18th century show figurines from the 7 Years War with The Jacobite Rebellion and the Raid on St. Francis. His toy soldiers from the 19th Century show figurines from The War of 1812. And his Twentieth Century toy soldiers show figurines like airplanes in the Knights of the Skies collection. Every figurine John Jenkins Designs produces has lifelike detail. Props like buildings, guns and spears, and airplanes add accents to these personalities.
