Tips For Successfully Capturing A Great Photograph
by Allison Maggie Sanchez
Read through your camera's manual. Manuals can be thick, heavy and contain a lot of technical terms. Most people put them back in the box or toss them without ever looking at them. Rather than disposing of it, take some time and read it. You will take better quality pictures without making trial-and-error mistakes.
For a gripping photo, experiment with depth of field. You can focus on your subject more by using a smaller depth-of-field to blur the background. This type of photography is great for portraits, because the subject is usually near the camera and is meant to be the main focus. In contrast, using a larger depth of field (high f-stop value) puts the whole frame into focus. This works well to photograph landscape.
Don't limit your portrait photography to just the face. The human body provides ample opportunities for striking photography.
Overcast skies aren't great for pictures. If your photos contain too much gray sky they will appear washed-out and muted. A better option for shooting in overcast is to use black and white. A bright, blue sky can create a lovely backdrop as long as you are careful not to overexpose the shot.
Before you jump in and start snapping away, try to envision a concept for your shot. Spend a few minutes brainstorming and coming up with ideas that might improve the quality of your shot. Photography is part technical skill and part art, and well-thought out plans and detailed attention definitely produce better shots. You will be inspired and see much better results, if you take this approach.
Though it is tempting to put your digital camera on the lowest setting in order to get more images on the card before having to download them, make sure you realize what you are sacrificing in terms of print quality. Lower settings should only be used when you are one hundred percent confident that the images you are capturing will never see printing on paper.
Use limitation to help you become more creative. For example, set a goal for the day to only shoot images that represent a single concept, such as "sweet." Try to take at least 100 different pictures from the same vantage point or in the same room. This can help you to be more creative by forcing you to step outside of your comfort zone.
Do you have to take pictures of objects that are wet with rain? You can create this effect yourself with a spray bottle that you can mist over the subject to give the appearance of "rain."
Photography is fun to share with children. If you get your kids into photography and buy them a small and inexpensive camera, they may love it forever. Children will enjoy family time snapping photos of and with other family members.
If you find yourself out and about with your camera and see something that you would love to photograph, make a little note to come back to that spot, when time permits and you are equipped to take the photo. Be prepared with pen and paper at all times so you can jot down the information needed to find your way back to the area.
If you take a picture of tall buildings or mountains, have people in the frame to give a better idea of the height and width of the structure. Without a familiar point of reference, viewers of your photographs might not be able to judge the dimensions of a large and unfamiliar subject when it is taken out of context.
Always think about the purpose of every photo you shoot. Some photos are better shot vertically than horizontally and vice versa. You can probably edit your photo either way once it has been downloaded, but sometimes, you can get a better result by using the right orientation in the first place.
