Jewellery are like people today; they have varied beginnings and origins. There are many legends about the origins of jewelleries. In any case, archeological studies indicate that the first clues of jewellery were seen in Africa about 70,000 years ago. They were made out of raw materials that our ancestors come across in the woods or in the great outdoors. In those days, ancient men create different forms of jewellery to reflect their values or to signify the tribe that they belonged to. Back in those times, jewellery created by people were fashioned out from shells, animal bone fragments as well as stones. Of course, they were not of top quality like today's jewellery are due to the absence of metal forging equipment, but they were every bit as important to these people as they are to us today. For instance, they were worn to supposedly protect an individual from malignant spirits or bad vibes.

The functions of jewellery have basically developed throughout different periods over time. Every specific era had different outlooks on the subject of jewellery. The ancient Egyptians were the ones who established or forged the first alloy jewellery. They made use of gold and bronze as main materials in forging their jewels. Egyptians also held the belief that jewellery were imbued with magical powers and that the wearer will also acquire the power hidden inside of the trinket. Opposing this theory are the Greeks and Romans. As opposed to the Egyptians, they made jewellery that were meant to improve their looks and show off their culture and tradition. The Renaissance era produced varying designs that are eye-catching in nature. People made use of many precious gems and stones to adorn their jewellery.
