Creating Scenery and Model Railroad Trains

by Bill Andrew

Part of the fun of model railroads is being able to build the scenery around them. Once you have gotten tired of setting up the train set around the Christmas tree and putting it away after Christmas every year, you might be ready to build yourself something more permanent.

Building a model railway starts with the putting the benchwork together. The train hobbyists make the decision to purchase benchwork that is already put together or they make the decision to make the benchwork all on their own. There are many benefits to purchasing the benchwork in a kit. The kits are already drilled and cut for you. They also provide more stability than a simple piece of plywood that you have rested on a pair of sawhorses. The kits are also more transportable so you can move it around your house or take it with you to a show.

For the train enthusiast that has a particular design in mind, creating the benchwork for themselves may be the best answer. It may take them more time and be a little more complicated but they can create the masterpiece that will fulfill all pieces of their imagination. The layout for the benchwork is something that a designer should take into consideration in the beginning. Decide on the size of your benchwork based on several factors. If you are planning to make additions to the design in the days and years to come then you should allow room for it in the initial plan. Another big factor in the design will be how much room you would like to take up with the final creation. Do you have a certain shape in mind, such as rounded, oval, square, or rectangular, for the top of the benchwork? Twenty eight inches is the average length for the table legs unless you have other specifications in mind that will fit your design better. The stability of the benchwork is one of the most important aspects in model train building. You must ensure that the table can support all of the weight that you will be putting on its so 3/8 or inch ply board would be the best solution. If you plan on dismantling the set to transport it places then you should consider cutting the board into smaller pieces prior to assembling it.

The visual perspective that viewers get from your train set should allow them to feel as if they are actually in the setting themselves. You want them to feel as if the set is much bigger than it actually is. Applying different levels to the train set can help you accomplish this. Put the largest of the trees in the front of the set and the smaller trees in the distance so they look smaller as they are further away. Put small trees at the tops of the mountains to give a great impact as well. Your theme that you choose should continue through the entire set through the landscaping. If you have decided to have a logging train traveling on your track then you should put dangerous mountains in the back ground or incorporate lumberyards and sawmills that are surrounded by trees.

Putting extra touches in your landscape can add to the detail of the set. Put in beautiful grassy meadows, long roads and bridges, tunnels and rock formations, and gorgeous fields in place to add dimension. The finer details that are available include telephone poles, signs, bushes and flowers, hedges and underbrush, and animals and people. You can even add in a river or stream, a stream or a waterfall. These are all very nice touches.

Our artistic talents are just waiting to be revealed and the model train sets that we create are the perfect place to express them. The breathtaking and dramatic landscaping ideas that we have are shown on the track. Begin expressing your talents today and let everyone see how great they look.
