A Quick Guide to Taking Great Care of Your Baseball Cards

by Bob Cadsmith

Following a few simple tips for storing and handling your baseball cards can make a huge impact on the value of those cards in the long run. Baseball cards lose a lot of value when they aren't properly handled and stored, even minor damage can drastically reduce values.

Tips About The Storage Environment

Don't try to put a card in the wrong size sleeve, top loader, or screw-down holder. Some cards are thicker than others and you need the appropriate size holder for those cards. Visit this site for an overview on baseball card sizes. Resist the urge to insert and remove your cards from their holders frequently and you'll lower the risk of damaging the cards quite a bit. It can be hard to resist sometimes because we do love to take them out and look at them up close but the fewer times you are handling them the less likely they'll get damaged accidentally. Use hard plastic baseball card holders for cards that young kids might want to handle. If you're starting a collection with your son or daughter for example it wouldn't be a whole lot of fun for them to never be able to pick the cards up, so putting them in a more protective case can remove almost all of the risk in letting them handle the cards.

Use Appropriate Baseball Card Holders

Collecting baseball cards with your kids can be a wonderful experience, helping them learn how to care for their cards in a fun way only makes it better. If you teach them to be careful with all cards, not just the valuable ones, they'll do better overall. Those no-value common cards are great cards for kids to take a look at and handle without a case but still teach them to handle them with care and that'll come second nature to them when they end up eventually handling more valuable cards in the future.

Take Extra Care When Inserting or Removing Cards from their Holders or Cases

Forcing a card into the wrong size baseball card holder is a sure way to damaging that card.. Cards come in various thicknesses so use holders or sheets made for that thickness card. Visit this site for an overview on baseball card sizes. Try to limit the amount of inserting and removing you do in the first place. It can be hard to resist sometimes because we do love to take them out and look at them up close but the fewer times you are handling them the less likely they'll get damaged accidentally. Try to use hard plastic baseball card holders when kids will be handling the cards. It would be no fun for kids if they couldn't ever handle the cards, and baseball card collecting is mostly about fun afterall, so using the proper cases allows kids to be more involved without feeling like they can never touch anything.

Protect Cards from Poor Environments

Keep your cards in a dry location that doesn't have significant variations in temperature. Extreme temperatures aren't good for your cards. Security should also be taken into account when considering the best place to store your cards. Valuable cards should be kept in a secure location, a fireproof safe is an ideal choice. For extremely valuable cards the same care that would be taken for any priceless collectors item be it a piece of art or what have you. A bank or other secure location might be the best option for those cases.
