by Sean T Saunders

Making your own handmade quilts at home saves you from having to purchase quilts from shops if you want to purchase a lovely quilt from the market, then you will need to spend lot of money on it. However, if you have some basic idea on quilting you can easily create your own handmade quilts at home. It's a great hobby that if practiced well can lead to beautiful clothing items or bed coverings. If you're a beginner, learning how to create handmade quilts is not an insurmountable endeavor. Here in this article we have listed out step by step instructions which will give you an idea on what you have to do to create good handmade quilts.

1. Choose or make a pattern. Usually separate blocks of fabric are sewn together into rows to craft the complete quilt pattern. There are a number of free quilt patterns offered. If you are creative, you can make your own pattern very easily. The very first step in the process is to decide which will be your core block. You can get some ideas from the free quilt block patterns available from internet resources. Get an idea on the blocks' final dimensions. Calculate what number of rows and columns you will require to create a quilt of the desired size.

2. Purchasing the fabrics would be the next step. Many different types of fabric materials are available. Based on the pattern that you have decided upon, choose the type of fabrics that goes well with it. Choosing cheap cotton fabrics on your first attempt will be a great idea. Also, be sure that you purchase fabric for the quilt backing.

3. You will have to purchase quilt batting. It goes between the quilt backing and the quilt top. Pick out batting capable of meeting requirements of how closely together the final project should be quilted.

4. Start cutting the fabric carefully based on the pattern instructions with the use of a rotary cutter and mat.

5. Next, sew the quilt top and then the individual squares. Be sure to keep to the pattern. The individual squares must be carefully sewn together to make a row. Then, sew every row together. If necessary, you can even add borders to all the four edges. The seams should then be pressed with an iron.

6. Begin quilting the project. Lay down the material for quilt backing on a clean, flat surface, with the print side down. Make sure that the fabric is firm by taping it to the floor/table. Next, lay down the quilt batting on top of it and put your quilt top, right side up, over the batting. Now you should use safety pins to attach all the three layers, securing a six-inch space in between them. Use either free motion quilting or stitch in the ditch technique to quilt your project.

7. The last step is to add a binding. Create binding strips, 2.5" wide by the perimeter and add a foot. The fabric has to be ironed well to remove any wrinkles. The binding strips must then be sewed over the quilt's front, flipped over to back and then sewed in place using hand stitch.

By understanding these basic steps on how to create handmade quilts, you can now start doing your first quilt at home.
