From Trinkets to Trollbeads: Modern Charm Bracelets

by Anita Hale

Charm jewellery is making a comeback. Of course, it never really went away. Charms first became popularised by soldiers during the world wars. Members of the military would purchase charms on their travels as a keepsake for their partners and a memento of where they had served overseas. But these charms were usually made by local craftsman and were neither commercial nor sophisticated. But by the Nineteen fifties charm bracelets had become popular with children who enjoyed the act of collecting and wearing a charm to represent an event in their life.

However, the most recent embodiment of charm bracelets appear to have been largely developed in Europe. It was the Danish company Trollbeads that brought about the revival that occurred in the nineteen seventies. These later bracelets featured a modular build. This meant that beads and charms had been produced to work with a particular threaded system. This system was exclusive to one particular make. By way of example, Pandora, another jeweller from Denmark, has a copyrighted model and so their charms cannot work with competitors' bracelets. These systems also guarantee that charms can fit correctly onto their specially designed bracelet, allowing the charms can be mixed and matched within their own brand.

Other companies that use threading methods in their bracelets include Links of London, Aagard and Lovelinks. On top of that, nearly all charm providers incorporate accompanying "clips" as well as charms. Clips are a sort of hinged charm that stays in a single point on the bracelet. They are used as a way of divvying up charms and keeping them from twisting all around the bracelet.

While Europe tops the heap when it comes to developing these many ranges of charms, they have also grown to be tremendously fashionable in America. The big lure of these more contemporary charm solutions is the versatility they offer. Types of bracelets available include chain links, and solid silver or gold bracelets that can hold many more charms. Bracelets like these are typically available to buy in silver, gold and now more commonly in leather.

Charms are also crafted from many different materials. The prices of these charms can vary greatly depending on what they have been made with. Sterling silver is the most common material, but charms can also be found with gemstones, enamel, murano glass and gold.
