Basic Equine Items Inside The Tack Box

by Allan Hatchell

A tack box is a primary tool for the protection and care of domesticated horses. Its primary function is to be a receptacle for all the basic equipment and accessories that are worn by the horse. This container greatly varies in size but more or less have the same shape and appearance. It is usually made in high quality wood material.

One of the most basic items that can be found in the tack locker is the saddle. This is a seat for the horse rider, which is attached to the animal's back. It is fastened by a strap called girth. It helps keep the equestrian in place especially when the horse is running. More so, it aids in preventing injury that may result from the direct contact of the rider with the animal's backbone.

Another basic piece of equine equipment is the stirrups. This is the part where the rider rests his feet for stability and balance as well as control for the movement of the horse. However, this can present a possible danger in cases when the person gets his foot fixed inside of it.

Head gears can also be stored in the tack trunk. This is primarily used to gain control on the direction and motion of the animal and therefore serves as a communication aid between the rider and the horse. Specifically, this allows the equestrian to move make the animal move to the left or right depending on the person's desired direction.

In addition, harnesses are also part of the set of equipment. These are straps that make it possible to connect a cart or a sledge to the horse. They are available in two styles, largely depending on the purpose. The breasts trap is usually used for light loads while the collar and hames tandem is suitable for heavy carts.

In addition, reins are also some basic equine accessories. These are produced either from nylon, metal or leather. They serve as communication tools that enable the equestrian to make the horse move in a specific way, be it to turn, stop or slow down.

Another item is the martingale. This Y-shaped strap is fixed on the horse's chest to keep the animal from raising its head too high. When this happens, the animal may accidentally hit the face of the rider. Therefore, this specific item is designed and used primarily for safety reasons.

Bits are common accessories attached to the horse. They are specifically laid in the animal's mouth. They are commonly made up of metal and should be placed correctly to avoid unnecessary pain. As with other basic accessories found in a tack box, this also serves as a communication tool that can be used between the animal and its rider.
