Purchasing Horsehair Pottery For Your Home

by Allan Hatchell

Horsehair pottery makes very lovely decorations for your home, indeed. They can come in various sizes and forms. But they all have one thing in common, that thing that makes the final product really attractive and that is, horse hair. The process involved in making these pots and decorations can be considered an intricate one.

The process starts with the selection of the clay to be used. Obtaining a smooth surface is a goal for every potter. For these products, using clays with grog contents of 15 to 40 percent is a must. After forming the ornament though, you have to burnish it first before it can be placed inside a specialized raku kiln.

Burnishing is the sanding process involved in pottery. It involves the use of smooth yet very hard surfaces in order to make the surfaces of the pots smoother. These can include plastic, wooden and bone spatulas, smooth stones, and glass bulbs. Making the surfaces smooth contributes to the aesthetics of the final products.

The temperature inside the kiln must be set at 1300 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. The adjustments will of course depend on the materials to be heated. After the heating inside the kiln is done, the materials have to be withdrawn using gauntlets and raku tongs. To prevent any injury from the heat, placing it on a non flammable top is a must.

Of course, the potter himself should wear protective clothing and paraphernalia to avoid any untoward effects. While the material is still hot, the potter will then get the hair to be used. Ideally, it is taken from the horse's tail more than from the mane. The hairs will make carbon markings on the surface, producing a very stunning effect.

However, interested parties should only use these pots for decorative purposes only. They are liquid permeable. Thus, they cannot be used as vases to contain your flowers. They are also not safe for food. Better just place them on cabinets or tables where they will be seen by many. If you purchase large items, place them at the sides of your home too.

It is good to know that some of these products have surfaces that are painted using different figures. Thus, you will not only be seeing black and white, but also rainbow figures. These products are being sold in native American art shops either offline or online. You can even find other items such as native American drum and native American chokers.

Horsehair pottery is a heritage to be proud of. Despite its long term existence, it still never fails to capture the awe of people especially house owners. If you are interested in making art yourself, you can even engage in such business while doing something that you love.
