How To Save Money On Buying A New Pontoon Boat By Fixing Up An Older One - Part 1

by David Charles

Did you recently purchase an older Pontoon Boat that could use a little help? I will show you how we turned our Project Pontoon Boat into a beautiful boat that our whole family can be proud of.

The entire project was not too expensive as we put no more than $2,000.00 into a boat that we were able to purchase locally for $3,500.00. The Pontoon Boat was chosen because it had a strong 1991 Outboard Two-Stroke motor and solid floorboards that did not need replaced. The Project Boat is a 1991 Lowe 18' Pontoon Boat and left a lot to be desired from an aesthetic standpoint. When it was all said and done, we were left with an amazing boat that people always have a hard time believing is over 20 Years Old.

Clean up those ugly Aluminum Pontoons and Railings. This will really make your boat shine (no pun intended) and make it look years newer. I frequently use a product called Nu Shine and it does a great job at eating away at the oxidation and build up on your boat. I can talk forever about ways to clean the aluminum on your boat but, you will just need to try different methods and see what works best for you. I have a feeling though, Nu Shine will probably be your favorite after you try it. It really does work like magic.

Black Streak Remover is a real life saver when trying to bring your Outboard Motor back to its original luster. It is very easy to use and does an amazing job of polishing up your 20 year old motor. Just spray the product on the outboard, let it sit on the surface and eat at the contaminants and then wipe it all off. Its that easy! Try it on some other spots and see what else you can clean up with it. You will be amazed!

During our Pontoon Boat Project, we decided to replace the old looking, wood-grain textured aluminum panels that were decorated with fading and chipped decals. We replaced the old panels with new smooth textured white panels to give the Pontoon Boat a nice modern look. You can purchase the panels in a number of different colors but I chose white because it was a nice neutral color I could match to any color scheme that I decided to go with. This is not an easy project that should be taken lightly. I was unaware of the long weekend that was ahead of me when I started to pull the old panels out. I would only recommend tackling this project if you are extremely handy and really have interest in torturing yourself. I cannot stress enough the amount of work that will go into replacing your Pontoon Boat panels. If you decide to take on this project, I personally used Aluminum Trim Coil from the local hardware store and cut it into the various panel sizes with metal shears. Once you have replaced all the panels apply the Pontoon Boat Graphics of you're choosing.

Make sure to check out Part 2 to see what else we did to our Project Pontoon Boat. We will cover Pontoon Bimini Tops, Pontoon Boat Seats, Pontoon Boat Carpet and Pontoon Floorboards.
