How To Shave With A Double Edge Razor

by Rod Eriko

You may be coming from dry shaving (employing an electric shaver) or using cartridges to shave and now need to find out how to shave using a double edge razor. Either way, you will be able to shave with a double edge razor immediately. However, if you are coming from electric shavers and haven't used a blade in a while you'll need to be extra careful not to cut yourself. To begin with you'll probably get some small cuts and nicks but don't worry, once you know how to shave properly and your skin gets more accustomed to it you won't be getting cuts nearly as often.

So, lets get to it. I usually shave following showering while my face is still wet and thoroughly clean:

1. Right after getting out from the shower maintain your face wet.

2. Start the hot water and soak your brush in the water. You may either fill up your sink or just create a sort of small cup using your hand/use a physical cup to submerge the entire brush in hot water.

3. Create a lather (to do this you will need soap or shaving cream). If you're using soap, pass your brush around it like 15 times, or take out an almond size amount of cream. With this I usually produce the lather in a small bowl, but other things from around the house such as a coffee mug would also work.

4.Time to get started! I normally do one pass through going with the grain, once across the grain and I'll do one more pass against the grain. Some have more sensitive skin than other people - if you have sensitive skin you canreplace the last pass through with one other pass going across the grain (but in the other direction ). When actually shaving, use little pressure and make sure you know which direction your facial hair grows in.

5. Once you're done shaving, rinse off your face with cold water. If you happen to have one, you can use an aluminum block to shut pores out and leave you with smoother skin. This isn't necessary but it is definitely good to have.

6. Apply aftershave. This is entirely your call. Some prefer alcohol based (the most typical kind) but some prefer ones that don't have any alcohol in them.

When you're done shaving just clean up your gear and you're good to go! Something I'd like to point out is the importance of knowing the direction that your facial hair grows. After ignoring these suggestions for some time, I decided to really get to know my facial hair. I have been getting much smoother shaves and much less cuts and nicks.
