Learning How Kettlebells Work

by Greg Diener

Whenever I go check out what's going on at a gymnasium, I will usually hear an answer about "what are these sets of weights" the ones they are referring to are known as kettlebells. Now what are kettlebells? They are a popular form of exercise equipment that has seen an increased wave of popularity recently. While these sets of weights and exercises are known to most people involved in fitness, a good number of individuals have little to no knowledge of how they work.

Kettlebells are cast-iron weights used for fitness purposes. They somewhat look like a solid iron tea kettle, just without the spout. Another way to detail them is a cannonball with a handle that had been added. They were initially used in Russia where they were used as weights for scales in marketplaces. Since they were mostly used to weigh agricultural equipment and products, kettlebells were mostly used by farmers. Eventually these farmers would turn swinging and carrying these weights into a tournament. Celebrations were held to showcase each farmer's skills. This would continue on for generations until it became more of a fitness tool.

These farmers started using kettlebells in the ways that we see today; swinging, lifting, squatting, jerking, cleaning, etc. They found that kettlebells helped increase their strength, speed, agility and endurance. Because of its abilities, the Russians started to develop workout routines around the kettlebell. The mechanical skill needed to use them properly also helped shape kettlebells into a Russian national sport.

Over time the use of Russian kettlebells stretched to other European countries. It slowly started gaining recognition in different nations and finally reached the land of America in the early 2000's. Since it has reached the United States, it has proceeded to increase in praise. More consumers are switching to kettlebells from the more traditional bar bell weights used in the United States. Not only are individuals implementing the kettlebells, but fitness sects, such as CrossFit, have begun to adopt them into their programs.

Kettlebells are so in demand because of their extremely productive techniques. While they do bring numerous positive results, they do have a high risk of injury. This is because of the actions are very particular and need to be completed with precision. Professional assistance should be sought before starting a fitness program that uses kettlebells so that the risk of injury is prevented as much as possible.
