Tips For Cleaning Old Metal Signs Naturally

by Ann Jordan

If you have old metal signs that are in need of a good cleaning, it is a good idea to clean them in the most natural way possible. Using techniques and products that are natural are less harsh on both you and your sign.

The first step is to fill a pale with water. The size of the pale depends on the size of the surface area to be cleaned. If you are simply dealing with small area to be treated than you can just use a small container or spray bottle. To the water, add some liquid dish soap. Liquid dish soap will allow you to clean any greasy surface with relative ease.

Use a cloth to help distribute the cleaning solution. If you are going to immerse the cloth in a pale of water be sure that you wring out the cloth so it's not too wet when used. Some people find the use of sponges or brushes really helpful. Do keep in mind, that brushes can sometimes be rough on surfaces so, be sure that if you choose one, you choose the softest one possible.

Drying off the sign very well after you have finished cleaning is really important. If while drying it you notice that the surface is still a little bit dirty in spots, there is no need to worry, the process of drying off the area will often help to remove any extra dirt that has been left behind.

If you find yourself faced with a more stubborn surface then vinegar can be added to some water. When you are adding vinegar, the cleaning mixture should consist of equal parts waters to equal parts vinegar. Just like when you are washing with the soap mixture, simply dry the area carefully after you have finished cleaning it.

If you find that despite cleaning with liquid soap and water or vinegar solution your sign is still not as clean as you would like you may want to consider using something else such as a salt and lime juice. Simply cover the surface with the mixture, rinse and dry.

Regardless of the mixture that you have chosen to use for cleaning or the size of the surface that is to be cleaned, always test a very small area of the surface before covering the entire surface with the cleaning solution to ensure that the solution is not too harsh for your particular surface. Cleaning a dirty surface gently and more frequently can help prolong the life of your products and make them easier to care for since more frequent cleaning would help prevent dirt buildup.

Safety should always be at the forefront of any activity. It is important if the old metal signs are up too high, you use extra caution while you are cleaning them. Having someone present while cleaning hard to reach areas is always a good idea to ensure help is readily available to you should you need any kind of assistance.
