Learning the rules of golf

by Jake Smith

This guide will help you to understand the rules of golf. It may seem intimidating at first but dont worry we will explain everything you need to know. It will be only a short time until you are comfortable with the rules.

Your Clubs

It is essential for beginners to learn what type of equipment to use in golf. There is so much variety of clubs on the market that it can be very difficult for beginner golfers to find the one that is ideal for them. When you are looking for the club that is ideal for you, it is important to choose golf clubs that are specifically designed to help you improve your skills. Remember, as a beginner, learning should be your priority, not buying.

The most important golf clubs you can have are the putter, sand wedge and driver. You will also want 2 or 3 irons. You may have a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag while on the golf course. However you wont need that many as a beginner.

The easiest clubs for you to use will probably be the ones with the most loft or angle like the 9 iron. These clubs allow you to get the ball in the air and your accuracy is usually better than when using a club with less loft such as a 3 iron. Find the clubs that suit you best. Before buying your own set of clubs it may be a good idea to try out different golf clubs and play a few rounds before deciding which you like best. This could save you the hassle of buying clubs that you later don't like.

Golf Balls

You are probably going to loose many golf balls as a beginner. Golf balls can be very expensive so we advise that you buy cheaper balls or use cheaper balls on holes that have a higher risk such as one with water hazards. Brand names don't matter too much but this is up to your personal preference.

Becoming a golfer

Below is a quick guide to the rules of golf. Since there are so many rules of this rewarding sport, this guide will focus on situations that are commonly encountered. The basic rules are not as hard as most people think, but it is important to regularly review them to avoid any confusion.

Golf etiquette

Be considerate to other golfers. Look after the golf course and greens. Dont waste time and hold up golfers that are behind you.

Before you start a golf round you should:

Check that you have the correct number of clubs. The rules are on the score card or near the tee off. Read them. Use a unique ball that you can recognise.

On the golf course

You are not allowed to use any unusual equipment or artificial devices during a round.Do not play any practice shots.Do not ask advice from anyone besides your friend or partner. The same goes for giving advice. However, you can ask and give information about the rules of golf.

When you are done playing :

Go through the results and double check.

Also, do not move loose impediments. If you play a ball that is not yours then you will lose the hole in match play. In stroke play, you will incur a two stroke penalty and must play the right ball to correct the mistake.
