A Short History of Pandora Jewellery

by Anita Hale

The name Pandora is synonymous with a widely known jewellery brand that originated in Denmark. These days it is mainly recognised for its charm bracelets . As of writing, Pandora has developed in excess of 800 individual charm designs. You can find this in over fifty different countries around the world. Pandora also produces other jewellery, including earrings, pendants and watches.

The jewellery maker's origins lie with Per Enevoldsen and his wife Winnie. Per started off as a goldsmith. In 1982 he and Winnie opened a jewellery shop in Copenhagen. They made regular trips to Thailand in search of jewellery to sell back home.

The couple did so well that they decided to concentrate on wholesale as well as retail. They were so inspired by their visits to Thailand that they opened up a production facility there. This was christened Pandora Productions. They appointed Lone Frandsen to develop a unique jewellery range to go into production.

By 1987 the organization had become rebranded as only Pandora. Manufacturing was brought back to Denmark with a head office situated in Copenhagen. That same year the business opted to finish all of its retailing activity. This indicated that Pandora was in essence a jewellery maker and wholesale vendor.

In 1996 Pandora obtained another jewellery designer known as Lisbeth En Larsen. Lisbeth and Lone worked together to design and define a type of jewellery that would set Pandora apart from the competition.

It was in 2000 that the significant moment for the jewellers took place. This was the year that Pandora unveiled its initial set of charms and charm bracelets. Per and Winnie had been very wise in their choice of jewellery. Charms were experiencing a comeback and these new charms were unlike the rest. They were made out of fine quality metals including sterling silver and 14k gold. Some were even accentuated with gemstones, enamel or glass. This balance of good quality components and the extensive choice of designs made the charms a smash hit with customers.

An added benefit was the simple fact that every single charm was machined using Pandora's patented threading technology. Each individual charm needed to be screwed over the threaded ends of the Pandora bracelet to safeguarded it. This turned out to be a sharp tactic by Pandora. It provided a failsafe that users could only fit their Pandora charms onto a branded bracelet. This meant that once you had a Pandora bracelet you ensured your loyalty to the brand.
