Rare Pennies

by Sienna Nalin

Pennies can be collector items with values if you are looking for the right type of penny. Much older pennies that are not made with the metal that pennies today are made with are exactly what you want to look for.

Coins are no longer just for collectors, but everyone now is jumping to invest in them since the economy is so unstable and everyone wants to be prepared for whatever may happen. It is better to be safe than sorry, right? Many people are going to coins to stay financially stable because of the metals and the fact that some are collectors' items. You can make quite a profit with coins.

Pennies are becoming very popular. At least the rare ones that are worth money are. Because of this many people are checking coins now to see if they do have something rare in their hands. You must be very knowledgeable when it comes to collecting coins and which ones will pay the big bucks.

As far as the American Open Currency says, pennies have three important factors to them. First off pennies that are made with particular metals are worth looking into; secondly, pennies are worth their face value as far as buying things go; thirdly, coins gain their value if they have certain significance as far as their date, rarity and the amount minted goes.

Pennies coined today are made of 97.5 percent zinc and only contain 2.5 percent copper meaning their intrinsic value is very low and comparable to paper money. On the other hand pennies minted from 1909 until 1982 are in a completely different class altogether, because they were coined with 95 percent copper and only 5 percent zinc. Currently, copper trades at about $3.72 per pound making these pennies worth about 2.5 cents each. To put it differently, if you have $100 worth of pre-982 pennies the copper value of the coins is $250.

Now I am pretty sure most of you are saying I have no time to be looking at every penny I come across because the fact they all start to look alike after a while. Do not even bother doing so because by time you get them melted down for that metal, the money you'll receive would not be worth all that. One penny that you should look out for if any is a 1943 penny which is worth $82,000. This penny of course is a collectible coin. So by now I am pretty sure it is best to look for collectible coins since there is a huge market for them.
